Every two to five years an etire population of a particular species will produce an unusually abundant crop. Mast can be hard nuts (like acorns or walnuts) or soft fruits (like persimmons or pawpaws). Mast trees are just trees that produce mast and are the primary food source for wildlife during the long winter months.
