Here the term perennial refers to plants that live for more than three years, usually with new growth each season from the part of the plant that survives the winter. In the southeastern US, perennials typically survive the winter months by means of underground root or modified stems, such as bulbs, corms, tubers, or rhizomes; as the aboveground portions of these plants often die back in the fall.
